Dynamesh in Zbrush

Dynamesh in Zbrush

It adds Extra Voxels to the mesh which allow you to sculpt extra details

Example 1: Stretched faces

If you use the Move brush on a mesh it will stretch the faces and it will be harder to model small areas like ears or sculpt horns

(Fig.1) Topology before using Move brush

Let’s say we decided to interpolate Horns

(Fig.2) Topology after using Move brush

Notice the topology stretch, we can’t sculpt details on a low resolution mesh, so in order to add more resolution to the horns we will use Dynamesh which is located in geometry panel > Dynamesh

  1. Set the resolution that matches your requirement
  1. Activate  Dynamesh
(Fig.3) Topology after using Dynamesh

As you keep moving the geometry, the mesh parts will get stretched

(Fig.4) Topology in the block out process

While Dynamesh is active just hold down ctrl + left mouse and drag on an empty part of the canvas it will re-dynamesh with new segments

(Fig.5) Topology after re-dynamesh

Example 2: Merge and combine subtools / meshes

Let’s say we want to merge this star to the character head to be one mesh

(Fig. 6) Before merging the subtools

(Fig. 7) After merging the subtools into one subtool

(Fig. 8) After using Dynamesh to merge the two forms into one mesh

Conclusion:

When to use Dynamesh

  • Block out Forms and base shape
  • Quick Concept when you are not worry about topology (get client/Art director Approval)
  • Merging and Combine Forms
  • Add resolution to stretched forms
  • If you are working with Highpoly

When not to use Dynamesh

  • If you want to maintain topology
  • If you want to maintain UVs
  • If you want clean edge flow
